Volcanoes in Journey to the Centre of the Earth?

Could you tell me the names,or even better, provide me some pics/maps of the volcanoes of Iceland mentioned in the great book by Jules Verne?

The volcano they used in the book was named Snaefell. There is a picture of it here. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Snaefellsj%C3%B6kull.jpg

Are Iceland’s Sigur Rós the saviors of 21st-century rock or true heirs to the silk-robed-and-platform-booted, pompous progressive rock of the ’70s? On their third album (first for a major label), they are a little bit of both. The group continues to mix the most interesting aspects of U2 (the anthem), Low (the maximalist slow-mo thing), Radiohead (the utter lack of irony in the quest to make mean…

Excerpt: The Prose Edda, also known as the Younger Edda, Snorri’s Edda (Icelandic: ) or simply Edda, is an Old Norse language Icelandic collection of four sections interspersed with excerpts from earlier skaldic and Eddic poetry containing tales from Norse mythology. The work is often assumed to be written by the Icelandic scholar and historian Snorri Sturluson around the year 1220. The Prose Edda begins with a euhemerized Prologue followed by three distinct books: Gylfaginning (consisting of around 20,000 words), Skáldskaparmál (around 50,000 words) and Háttatal (around 20,000 words). Seven manuscripts, dating from around 1300 to around 1600, have independent textual value. The purpose of the collection was to enable Icelandic poets and readers to understand the subtleties of alliterative verse, and to grasp the meaning behind the many kennings that were used in skaldic poetry. The Prose Edda was originally referred to as simply the Edda, but was later called the Prose Edda to distinguish it from the Poetic Edda, a collection of anonymous poetry from earlier traditional sources compiled around the same time as the Prose Edda in 13th century Iceland. The Prose Edda is related to the Poetic Edda in that the Prose Edda cites various poems collected in the Poetic Edda as sources. The assumption that Snorri Sturluson is responsible for writing the Prose Edda is largely based on the following paragraph from a portion of Codex Upsaliensis, an early 14th century manuscript containing the Prose Edda: This book is called Edda. Snorri Sturluson compiled it in the way that it is arranged here.

Excerpt: The Zeno map is a map of the North Atlantic first published in 1558 in Venice by Nicolo Zeno, a descendant of Nicolo Zeno, of the Zeno brothers .The younger Zeno published the map, along with a series of letters, claiming he had discovered them in a storeroom in his family’s home in Venice. According to Zeno, the map and letters date from around the year 1400 and purportedly describe a long voyage made by the Zeno brothers in the 1390s under the direction of a prince named Zichmni . The voyage supposedly traversed the North Atlantic and, according to some interpretations, reached North America .Most historians regard the map and accompanying narrative as a hoax , perpetrated by the younger Zeno to make a retroactive claim for Venice as having discovered the New World before Christopher Columbus .The evidence against the authenticity of the map is based largely on the appearance of many non-existent islands in the North Atlantic and off the coast of Iceland . One of these non-existent islands was Frisland , where the Zeno brothers allegedly spent some time.Current scholarship regards the map as being based on existing maps of the sixteenth century, in particular:References (URLs online) A hyperlinked version of this chapter is at …

Excerpt: The Kirkjuból witch trial was the perhaps best-known witch trial in Iceland . It took place in Kirkjuból in 1656.The witch trial was caused by the priest Jón Magnússon, who had been suffering poor health since 1654. That year, a with trial was held, and he believed that his sickness was caused by magic. He accused a father and son, Jón Jónsson the Elder and Jón Jónsson the Younger, of witchcraft. The father confessed that he owned a book about magic and that he had used it against the priest. The son also confessed to having made the priest ill and of having used magical signs and farting-runes (Fretrúnir) against a girl. Both father and son were found guilty of sorcery and were executed by burning at the stake. After they were executed, the priest received all their material holdings but was not satisfied and tried to accuse Jónssons daughter of witchcraft. The case was brought to Thingvellir , was dismissed and the woman let free. In Iceland, magic was often practised and not associated with the Devil , but the authorities, in shape of priests who were often from Denmark , had a completely different view on the subject. The witch trial was made in to a film by Hrafn Gunnlaugsson in 2000 called (In English ) “The Prince of Darkness”.Victims of the Icelandic witch hunt In Iceland, in contrast to many other countries, the majority of people executed for wicthcraft were male . This is a sample of the executed on Iceland. Women where normally drowned, while men was burned:References (URLs online) A hyperlinked version of this chapter is at …

Excerpt: The Middletown studies are a classic sociological case study of a city, Muncie, in Indiana, as contained in two books by Robert Staughton Lynd and Helen Merrell Lynd: They wrote this about the first book: “The city will be called Middletown. A community as small as thirty-odd thousand… the field staff was enabled to concentrate on cultural change…the interplay of a relatively constant…American stock and its changing environment” (1929: p. 8).In these studies, the Lynds and a group of researchers conduct an in-depth field research study of a small American urban center in order to discover key cultural norms and better understand social change. The first study was conducted during the 1920s, beginning in January, 1924, while the second was written
